Our Five Favourite Restaurants in Stellenbosch

Of course, we eat regularly at Rozendal Restaurant, enjoying the Fresh Green Salad, Lamb with Red Onion Sauce and the Lemon Verbena Ice-Cream. But when we feel like venturing out of our little paradise into town, there are a few restaurants we love and can highly recommend.

Meraki

Meraki   Meraki2

Meraki (formerly Nook) is a local eatery serving breakfast, a seasonal lunch buffet and home-baked goods with huge helpings of care and warmth. Their sticky buns and freshly roasted coffee by Legado make the perfect start to the day.

Open Mon – Fri: 8:00am – 5:30pm and Sat: 8:00am – 12:00pm.

The Slug and Lettuce

Slug&Lettuce

Slug & Lettuce is situated within the historical centre of Stellenbosch, and makes a welcome lunch stop between museums, galleries and general wanderings. Our favourite item on this pub menu (as the staff well know) is the Prego Roll (best in town) washed down with a pint of Johnny Gold Weißbier.

Open Mon – Sat : 11am – till late and Sun : 12pm – 9pm.

Casparus

For something more upmarket, but also more quirky, we love Casparus. When renowned chef Etienne Bonthuys (“The Sauceror”) teamed up with a Slee Architects and land artist Strijdom van der Merwe, we knew something good was in store. And not just good, but also daring and exciting. Dishes are unusual – oxtail with squid kind of unusual – but brilliant, and the interior has a wonderful inside-outside feel.

Open Tues – Sat for lunch: 12.30pm – 2pm and 7pm – 10pm

Oude Bank Bakkerij

The Oude Bank Bakkerij, as its name suggests, centres on a bakery. And there’s not much food that’s as moreish as freshly baked bread. Think sourdough loaves, comfort breakfasts, and pizzas made in the bread oven.

Open Tue – Fri: 8:00am – 3:00pm, Sat: 8:30am – 3:00pm, Sun: 8:30am – 1:00pm

Postcard Café

Postcard Cafe

Postcard Café as our neighbours, as they are just up the road – securing the best view in the Jonkershoek Valley. The menu is simple but considered, and a Rozendal favourite is the Asian Chicken Salad. You also have the option of walking off the meal while exploring the large pond’s perimeter, or indulging in some wine tasting on the pond’s island.

Open 9:30am – 4:00pm. Closed every Monday.
